What is Soul? 4 Ways Therapy can help you connect with meaning and your purpose.

Connecting with our soul helps us feel less anxious and depressed!

We can have all the coping skills in the world and know therapy talk from to back, but we still find ourselves lost! Thomas Moore writes that psychotherapy means to “serve or care for the soul. “ In my humble experience, The Soul is what makes us feel alive, connected to ourselves, to others, and the broader world around us. The soul expression is unique to each person, which makes you so wondrous. Each person‘s expression of the soul is needed for our world to feel complete. Who are you to stand in the way of your Genius and beautiful purpose here on earth?

How do you nurture your body, soul, and mind?

Our culture embeds specific stories and myths that we believe about ourselves. Our senses are bombarded with what we should do and what we should not do, how we should raise our children, how we should be in the world, the roles play in society, yet at the same time and yet people are yearning for more and for the authentic way of being. But, that journey is scary because these roles are connected to identity and our sense of belonging in this culture. So it becomes hard for us to question these rules because they make up who we are, but a part of you knows that you are more than all these roles.

When the soul stirrers inside of us, our life can look like this: A sense of depression that overcomes you, and you’re not sure where this is coming from, but life has lost its luster you’re not as motivated to do your things, you feel like you’re a rut, you can’t explain why you’re feeling so sad and upset. The thoughts, “ I have everything I want. I’ve got a family, kids, great career, a great house safety, yet you’re still feeling depressed”. Or you might be experiencing some increased anxiety; where are you are trying to grow to ask for anything in your life that has meaning and purpose, and you’re finding yourself on this kind of internal hamster wheel that feels exhausting and tired. Or your heart has experienced so many losses, anguish, and disappointments, and you cannot find the same joy in the roles or activities that lit you up. Even though we have all that we need, technology, and a sense of connection through our technology, our brain is biologically wired to connect and feel a sense of belonging and true meaning in a community/tribe. And true belonging starts with being authentic and being able to accept it while being uncomfortable.

How are you hiding these hurt parts?

Many people think that being authentic means that people will accept you as you are. People close to you well; however, this notion doesn’t quite add up. Because being authentic means that you accept yourself, and you are showing up in the world in a way that fits you. It doesn’t have to fit other people, or they don’t have to like it, but it feels right for you. You’re not taking any shit, and you’re not doing any harm.  What does this have to do with the soul? By being unapologetically you, you connect with your soul. Being unapologetic doesn’t mean putting others down or enjoying when they suffer. But a deep sense of confidence where you are okay with who you are! Here is where therapy can help:

We try to fear a lot in our life which makes us feel safe. But living fully is what scares us most.

  1. Therapy can help you learn how to find strength and validation within yourself! You can stand in your power, speak your truth, and learn to let go of judgment, whether yourself or others.

  2. Therapy can help you learn about your feelings/emotions, what they are trying to tell you, understand how your thoughts and actions are connected.

  3. Therapy can help you feel seen and heard. Being seen, heard, and listened to helps you build empathy and self-compassion to validate yourself from the inside.

  4. Therapy can help you heal from past wounds (childhood, relationships, etc.). You can let go of the baggage and live freely, validating yourself and not looking for it on the outside.

What would happen if you let go of some of the negative stories you are telling yourself?

There are many other wonderful benefits of therapy, and these are just a couple of examples I find meaningful and see across all my clients. I can help you move through these blockages or stories that you’ve been telling yourself all the rules you’ve been playing in life. This journey can help you find a deeper connection to yourself and who you are, impacting your family, community, and the world.

Sincerely,
